Doctor costs in Czechia without insurance
What a GP visit, specialist, ER trip or hospital stay costs if you're uninsured — and how to pay less.
Without Czech public insurance you pay doctors in cash, as a so-called self-payer (samoplátce). This applies to tourists, some long-term residents from outside the EU, and anyone whose coverage lapsed. Each facility sets its own prices — here are typical ranges.
Typical self-payer prices
- GP visit: 1,000–2,500 CZK
- Specialist consultation: usually 1,500–3,500 CZK
- Emergency room: 2,000–5,000 CZK
- One day in hospital: can exceed 10,000 CZK
- Acute dental treatment: from about 1,500 CZK depending on the procedure
Facilities are obliged to tell you the price in advance — always ask before being treated.
EU citizens: use your EHIC card
If you're insured in another EU/EEA country, Switzerland or the UK, your EHIC card entitles you to medically necessary care under the same conditions as Czech patients — at contracted providers. It does not cover planned treatment or private clinics.
Staying over 90 days: insurance is mandatory
Non-EU foreigners staying over 90 days who don't qualify for public insurance (through employment or permanent residence) must hold Comprehensive Foreigners Health Insurance (KZPC), arranged via VZP, PVZP or Slavia. Without it you risk not just large bills but also problems extending your visa.
How to pay less
- Ask for the price in advance and get it confirmed in writing (email)
- Public and university hospitals are usually cheaper than private international clinics
- If you have any insurance at all, verify in advance whether the facility accepts it
- Don't postpone treatment — small problems become expensive ones
